I saw this quote on a science curriculum site and I thought, “That’s it, that’s what I’ve been saying forever–how drama curriculum, through active learning, is everything any school needs to incorporate all their recommended skill sets into just one lesson!”

Here’s the quote, a Chinese Proverb, are you ready, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Engage me and I learn.”

It’s simple really, by actively participating in activities, rather than just observing others do them, we remember them. Our experiences become the stories we tell, to entertain over a campfire, at a family get-together, or just in the car on our way to our kid’s soccer game. Our experiences are our stories, the things we enjoy, the things we talk about and the things that matter to us. All else is water under the bridge.

Play-Based Learning, Active Learning-Why Didn’t You Just Say So?!

If you work in education, you’ve probably read plenty of articles about the “Early Years Learning Framework” (EYLF) principles of early childhood pedagogy. Truthfully, I had to look up the word “pedagogy” and by definition it means, “the function or work of a teacher; teaching; the art or science of teaching; education; instructional methods.” Well then, WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST SAY SO?!?!

Here’s the deal, there are plenty of “scholarly articles” that use big words and talk about why play-based or active learning works in the classroom, especially in early childhood development. 

While it’s always great to have scholars backing up what we know to be true with research and facts, let’s face it; we, as people who live and breathe and study and learn already understand from our own everyday experience that if we want to retain something we need to actively participate in it to know more about it.

Do people toss out instructions before they build things? Yes, they want to learn by doing. Did you learn more from your history lesson in grade school when your teacher made you wear a paper-plate curled up hat and made you “act” as Ben Franklin than you did when you had to just read it in a book or hear it in a lecture? Of course you did.

So let’s say it like it is we KNOW play-based or active learning works, for all people, on all levels so let’s do it!

Rainy Day Fun:

Pretend the raindrops are magic and each time a new drop hits you, you grow bigger and bigger until you are a giant. Walk like a giant, talk like a giant, shake hands with other giants.

Scatter around the area and become an animal from the Rain Forest.

o   Are you a blue Morpho Butterfly that eats fruit from the floor of the rainforest?

Cloudy Day Fun:

Grab a pad of paper and a crayon and draw the pictures you see in the clouds. Do you see an elephant? A race car? An ice cream cone? Can you add the first letter of each of you pictures to the drawing?

Windy Day Fun:

You are a kite with a colorful tail (scarfs). What kind of kite are you? Are you shaped like an animal? What color of kite are you? Do you move quickly or slowly in the wind? Do you move straight or do you wiggle around in the wind? Where are you flying to?

You are on an island of friendly giants. When the giants breathe you can feel their breath on your face and blowing in your hair. Is the giant’s breath stinky? What do you think they had for lunch? Is the giant blowing softly or really, really hard?  Are they blowing so hard you might fall over? Can you run away from the giant’s breath or does it just follow you around?
